(Review for Nintendo Switch)

I admit it was the goofy trailer that got me to try this game. Sounded kind of like some cheesy 80s B movie.

Unfortunately for the game the cheesy B movie lines are in text instead of voice and they kind of get in the way of play.

Space Pioneer is a top down shooter that takes place in space. Your job is to explore new planets and keep alien threats away from human colonies.

The game has several modes which can break up some of the monotony. You have the original solo mission mode which has I believe 11 chapters and it’s divided into a bunch of different missions. There are boss fights with obviously giant bosses which are flanked by minions. There’s horde mode where it’s just waves and waves of aliens and you have to defeat them as fast as possible you do have multiplayer and co-op mode but unfortunately I was not able to try those.

For me, the game gets a little monotonous. While the missions do change they’re not that much different from each other and the missions are short. The bosses do have some variations which keep those interesting.

Space Pioneer is an okay little game but it feels like something is missing and I’m not sure what it is. The game feels more like a mobile game which I believe is the version that came first. If I was to rate the game I’d probably be at a 6/10. Of course that’s just my opinion you may feel differently. If you have any other game published by Qubic then you can get this game on your Switch for $0.99. you can’t beat that deal.
